Tips for Quick Edits

Quick pick of an edge loop

Double clicking an edge selects edges connected to the edge at a time. Following double click reset the selection. This tip is for time-saving at the stage of selecting cut-lines before unfolding.
Double click makes an edge vertical or horizontal

When the edit mode is [Rotate] ([2D Menu]-[Edit Mode]-[Rotate] ([Ctrl]+R)), double click of an edge rotates the part so that the edge becomes vertical or horizontal.
Select multiple edges by a rectangular area

[2D Menu]-[Edit Mode]-[Edge Color] ([Ctrl]+E) enables you to change the color of edges or hide edges. It is time consuming to click many edges one by one. Multiple edges can be selected by a rectangular area simply by dragging the left mouse. The colors of selected edges are changed at a time. You can also set a mask for selecting specific type of edges by checking the type in the Select Target option on the [Line Color] dialog.
Select multiple flaps by a rectangular area

[2D Menu]-[Edit Mode]-[Edit Flap] ([Ctrl]+F) enables you to change the height and the angles of the flaps. It is time consuming to click many flaps one by one. Multiple flaps can be selected by a rectangular area simply by dragging the left mouse. Note that the invisible flaps (appears when the edge is separated) are also selected. The height and angles of selected flaps are changed at a time.
Locate a part

[2D Menu]-[Edit Mode]-[Select and Move] ([Ctrl]+M) enables you to move the selected part by left mouse drag. The arrow keys on the keyboard are also used. Multiple parts can be selected by a rectangular area by dragging the left mouse. [Ctrl]+Click toggles the state of selection. Even when the Edit Mode is not [Select and Move], single part can be moved by the drag of the left mouse. Snapping to the grid is switched by [2D Menu]-[Snap to Grid] menu.

Advanced Tips

Make a symmetrical model

First, make a half model on your 3DCG software. Second, make the unfolded pattern on Pepakura Designer and save it. Third, select [Others]-[Mirror Inversion] command, then both the 3D model and the pattern are inverted in x-coordinate. Finally, import the saved data (which is saved before [Mirror Inversion] command) through [File]-[Import File (*.pdo)].
Reload the modified model

You do not need to edit the 2D pattern again from scratch even after you notice the need of the modification of the 3D model. [File]-[Reload 3D Model] command reloads the modified 3D model, and then updates the 2D pattern automatically by checking the difference between the original one and the reloaded one. Pepakura Designer can also keep monitoring the updates of the model.
Use Pepakura Designer as an UV editor

After editing the pattern, [File]-[Export]-[3D Model/UV Info (*.OBJ)] command exports the 3D model and the UV info to an .obj file. The UV coordinates are set as shown on the 2D pattern. This means Pepakura Designer can be used as an UV editor. The left bottom image shows the screen of Metasequoia, a 3DCG software, loads the UV set by Pepakura Designer.

Other Tips

Add the outline paddings

[2D Menu]-[Add Outline Padding] adds colored offset to the outline of the pieces. At the stage of assembling, it makes mismatched glued area unnoticeable. This helps us to make good-looking paper models. The amount of the offsetting is changed through [Settings]-[Other Settings]-[Others].
Measure the distance between two points

[2D Menu]-[Edit Mode]-[Measure Distance between Two Points] command changes the edit mode to measure the distance between two points. This is used both on the 3D model and the 2D pattern. After two points are clicked, their coordinates and the distance are shown on a dialog. The value is the distance when the 3D model is assembled with current scale. The scale can be changed through [2D Menu]-[Change Scale]. The assembled size of whole model is shown at the right bottom of the window.
Change the rotation center of the 3D view

Clicking a point on the 3D model after the command [3D Menu]-[Change Rotation Point] ([Ctrl]+W) changes the rotation center of the 3D view. The clicked point becomes the center of the rotation. [3D Menu]-[Reset Model View] resets the view position.
